Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient form of alternative medicine, originating in China. It is a safe and effective method based on the premise to maintain homeostasis of one’s Qi (energy), an essential component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). When the body is healthy, Qi flows smoothly through the body’s meridians – a conceptual network of pathways or channels within the body for the flow of Qi. Along these channels are pressure points, called acupoints, where manual pressure can be applied or a thin needle would be inserted to clear any disturbance in the flow of Qi – which was believed to be the root cause of health ailments. Over thousands of years old, acupuncture is widely practiced throughout the world that consists of both traditional and modernized techniques and is widely researched and used by many allied health professionals.

What to expect:

Although acupuncture is known for the use of needles, other methods include cupping, herbal medicine, heating therapy, acupoint pressure therapy, QiQong (exercise) and GuaSha – a technique that utilizes a massage tool to improve circulation.

Acupuncture needles are thin metal needles (smaller than needles used for blood work or vaccinations) that are inserted into the body’s acupoints or specific areas of the body depending on the patient’s chief concern. Most people feel no pain upon insertion of the needle.

Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of conditions such as musculoskeletal pain, circulatory imbalances, headaches and many other health ailments.
